Here’s a little quaking aspen footage to inspire your Thanksgiving day. Populus tremuloides is an upper elevation tree found starting at about 9,000 feet elevation. Its white bark features black rings and scars, and its oval leaves flutter in the wind, a flattened stalk allowing for this characteristic flutter. Stands of quaking aspen may represent one large clonal colony, and #aspen trees of about the same truck diameter may indicate a previous wildfire in that area. See the #WNMU faculty’s nea

Quaking Aspen (Populus tremuloides), Poplar (P. deltoides and fremontii), Cottonwood (P. trichocarpa and hyb.) and various Willow species (Salix spp.) are all members of the Populus genus in the Salicaeae, or Willow, family, with 56 genera and about 1,225 species in all.🌿 The quaking aspens are fast-growing, short-lived, upright, branching, open, deciduous trees that typically grow in colonies of identical trees that may live thousands of years. Their clone offspring form new trunks that sprout

That leaf movement is not just some random trait – it’s a useful adaptation. Within sight of my front deck is a stand of young Poplar surrounded by a mixture of Pin Cherry, Red Maple, and White Birch. If there’s a

Pando, also known as the Trembling Giant, is an extraordinary grove of quaking aspen trees (Populus tremuloides) located in Fishlake National Forest, Utah, USA. What makes Pando unique is its interconnected root system, making it one of the oldest and heaviest living organisms on Earth. While the individual trees may appear distinct, they are genetically identical and connected by a massive underground network of roots. Pando's origin dates back thousands of years, and estimates suggest it could
