The American Society of Plastic Surgeons is recommending that surgeons delay gender-affirming surgeries until patients turn 19, including chest, genital and facial surgeries.

The A.M.A.’s announcement followed a similar recommendation from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Other medical groups argued for a more personalized approach.
